#33 Background's Sunday: Your Weekly Moment is Here!

New article at Background Mag!

Hey there,

Sometimes the most powerful journeys aren’t about where you arrive, but what you learn along the way. That’s the story of Daragh Morgan, who is swimming the entire coast of Ireland.

Daragh isn’t chasing records. He’s swimming 1,600 km to raise awareness for ocean conservation, but also to support the RNLI lifeboats that save lives at sea, and to back the Simon Community, which provides shelter on land. His project, Swim Éire, blends endurance, heritage, and science, reminding us that every stroke is also about connection.

Alongside him sails a crew on the Naomh Crónán, a restored Galway Hooker. Together they face storms, long nights, and shifting tides while also collecting water samples to better understand marine ecosystems. It’s a story about resilience, community, and what it means to trust the sea.

French Polynesia Just Created The World’s Largest Marine Protected Area

French Polynesia announced the creation of the world’s largest Marine Protected Area (MPA), at the U.N. Ocean Conference in France on Monday.

Fishpeople: While Daragh’s mission is rooted in the Irish coast, Human Water (a short doc by Patagonia Films) explores how water connects us all — from communities fighting for rivers in Chile to surfers protecting coastlines in California. It’s a reminder that every drop tells a story, and our responsibility is shared.
