#18 Background's Sunday: Your Weekly Moment is Here!
New article at Background Mag!
Hey,
We all love talking about surfing, picturing it as one universal thing. But what if surfing is more than that? What if it represents something entirely different depending on where it takes place? For some women and children living in conservative societies, surfing is more than a sport—it’s their way to find strength, hope, and freedom, breaking barriers in the process.
This is happening every day, everywhere. And it’s worth reminding ourselves that there's a whole world out there, with stories unfolding that we often miss. Mohammad Rakibul Hasan's article, The Odyssey of Little Mermaids, gives us a glimpse into one of those stories. It follows a group of young women surfers, pushing against the tides of tradition in a place where change moves slowly, but their spirits are unstoppable.
Let’s pause for a moment. We’re particularly excited about this piece because it gives a voice to those from a world many of us don’t truly know, and we are proud as a Magazine for making this happen. This story will move you in ways you don’t expect. Trust us.

EDITOR’S PICK
In these times, when the world seems more complicated than ever, stories of hope are vital—especially when they come from one of the epicenters of today’s challenges. If The Odyssey of Little Mermaids touched you, we believe you’ll also appreciate "Gaza Surf Club".
This documentary follows young surfers in Gaza who find freedom and strength in the waves, despite living in one of the most challenging places in the world.
It’s a powerful reminder that even in the toughest conditions, surfing can be a path to liberation.
